Breakfast has always been my favorite meal. Especially when it included things like our easy French toast recipe. I recall enjoying it as a child, but now, I like putting a fun new spin on it for my kids by making our classic French toast recipe into French toast sticks for kids to dunk in syrup!

For as long as I can remember, outside of Italian Bread, my mother always purchased whole wheat sandwich bread. Even though I grew up in the height of “all white sandwich bread” my mother was conscientious about providing us with whole grains, way before it was the popular thing to do.

Now that I have my own children, despite their complaints that other kids have white bread at lunch, I still purchase 100% Whole Wheat products. Not only do I make their sandwiches with this bread, but when I make my easy French Toast recipe, I also use whole wheat bread.

Easy French Toast Sticks Recipe

The easy french toast recipe does not change much, it is more of the technique. By simply cutting your Arnold bread in strips, the kids can have to fun finger food for breakfast.

I must admit the process takes longer than a traditional recipe but it’s worth it when you see the kids dipping their french toast strips into maple syrup.

CAN I MAKE FRENCH TOASTS STICKS AHEAD OF TIME?

If you are not going to be serving the french sticks immediately, I recommend putting them on a cookie rack or cookie sheet in a warming oven, as they might stick together if stacked.

CAN I FREEZE HOMEMADE FRENCH TOAST STICKS?

Allow the french toast sticks to cool completely on a wire rack.  Then freeze them in a single layer on a cookie sheet lined with parchment.

Once they are frozen, place them in a Ziplock bag and reheat in the microwave.

HOW SHOULD I SERVE FRENCH TOAST STICKS?

Serve with a side of warm maple syrup and watch the kids smile as they are allowed to use their fingers for breakfast.  Maybe even a little powdered sugar will get more smiles!

These were a big hit with everyone in the house. I made a few whole pieces of cinnamon french toast as well, once the kids were all served and I was tired of the individual slices. You can also bake these French toast sticks.
