NO Bake Protein Energy Balls

My sons have state tournaments this weekend for swimming and wrestling.  My husband and I are responsible for snacks for the wrestlers.  Since they need to get energy and protein in between their intense matches, we are making no bake energy balls with whey powder.

We have made these energy balls both with and without whey powder so we will give you recipes for both.  These are a simple snack to have on hand any day and I have been popping in a few for breakfast myself.

Since these are a no bake energy snack, they come together in less than 15 minutes.   Just make them a few hours ahead so they can set up in the fridge or place in the freezer for 1 hour before serving.

What type of peanut butter is best for energy balls.

We have made them with both chunky and smooth peanut butter.  The result is that the smooth peanut butter has more peanut butter flavor in our opinion.

However, we did only use the chunky when we used whey powder which could have been the reason it tasted less like Peanut butter.

IS THERE A GOOD NUT BUTTER SUBSTITUTE FOR PEANUT BUTTER?

If you don’t have peanut butter on hand orIf you have peanut allergies, you could use almond, cashew or sunflower butter.  It will just have a different flavor profile

  • Cashew Butter
  • Almond Butter
  • Sunflower Seed Butter

What type chocolate chips should I use for homemade energy bars

We made our first batch with regular size chocolate chips and the second batch with mini chips.  I found that large chocolate chip in such a small bite was a little hard to bite.

The mini chips also mix much better into the already hard to mix batter.

Can I make homemade energy balls with whey ahead of time

You definitely need to make them a few hours ahead, but to store them in the fridge

for a week or in the freezer for over a month.   Just make sure they are served cold or they may fall apart.

What kind of whey powder should I use for homemade no bake energy treats?

We used vanilla flavored since that was what we had on hand.  You could also use peanut butter powder.

They were gobbled up by the team and hope it helped them achieve first in states this year.

It is best to scoop the balls and then roll them.  Place them on a baking sheet to set up in the fridge or freezer.
