Teacher appreciation starts on May 7th, 2013. It is so important to recognize each teacher throughout the year, but I do like that the teachers are given extra attention for this week.

I wanted to share with you some of the ways to say thank you to those who have our children longer than we do during the day. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to say thank you, it is the thought that counts. So I am sharing some homemade Teacher Appreciation Gifts for the DIYer.

I made these pencil vases last year, but each of my kids wanted me to make them for their teachers again this year. I did not add the colored pencils that I included last year and found larger vases at the Dollar Store. For around $4 this is quite the gift.

This year I thought I would mix things up a little by making some cookies in the jars. Thanking the teachers for making some smart cookies this year… This way they can enjoy the cookies on their terms and they won’t go stale amongst the other food offerings this week.

Cookies in a Jar Recipe

Cookies In a Jar Recipe

Yield: 2 dozen cookies
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes

Cookies In a Jar Recipe: Make 1 gift jar Prep time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/8 tsp baking soda
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/3 c. granulated sugar
  • 1 cup Semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup quick or old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter, white or semi sweet chip, M and Ms, raisins, or nuts
  • Stir together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a small bowl.

Instructions

  1. Stir together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a small bowl.
  2. Layer the ingredients in a 1 quart glass canister or jar in the following order (from top to bottom): Granulated sugar, the 1 cup of chips, the brown sugar, flour mixture, oats, and 1/2 chips. Tap jar gently on the counter to settle each layer before adding the next one.
  3. Cover: attach baking directions to the jar.

Cookie in the Jar baking directions:

  1. Heat oven to 375'.
  2. Empty contents of jar into a large bowl.
  3. Add 1/2 c softened butter, 1 slightly beaten egg and 1 tsp vanilla extract, stir until well mixed.
  4. Drop dough by heaping tsp 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. b
  5. Bake 8-10 mins or until edges are lightly browned.
  6. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack.

    These are some really fantastic ideas! The pencil vases are adorable, and I have always been a big fan of the cookie (or other baked good) in a jar gift ideas because you don’t have to actually bake anything for the gift and you can get really creative with the labels. I never would have even thought of the chalk board paint cups. So creative!

    Kids in jars are great for non bakers definitely. If you can measure ingredients you have yourself a gift!! I just saw chalk board planters I might try as well.

    Love the cookie in a jar idea. I received one at a baby shower and actually made it. Considering it was the first time I baked, I think that it was a great gift!

    I agree that people think they have to spend a lot but they don’t. Love the pencil idea. You could even include some flowers from the garden to make it complete. Thanks for sharing.

    I forgot to mention this in the post you can use the tags as they are printed separately and just fill a bag of baked cookies with the smart cookie tag!

    I have had friends request the recipe even after I have improvised the chip add in for whatever I had at the house. Yes i should have photoed with flowers, too quick to get them out….oops
