If you have teens in your home you can appreciate the phrase, the kids eat you out of house and home. You know the drill, their lunches are packed to the top, they attack the kitchen when they get home from school and are begging for dinner an hour later. I know this too shall pass, once they leave the house for college, so I guess I need to embrace the never-ending munchers and just start preparing and stocking the house with nourishing and filling after-school snacks. However, the grocery bill is always going up so how do you save money on snacks for these hungry teens?

Setting up a Snack Drawer for Teens

Kids get bored with the same snacks. As parents you need to mix things up almost weekly so they will continue to pick the healthy snacks instead of craving sweets. I know they would love to eat ice cream for every meal, who wouldn’t? We have created a snack drawer in our pantry that is stocked with snack items that not only appeal to teens but are nourishing and energizing. It is so important to encourage healthy eating in our kids.

Setting up a Snack Drawer for Teens

  • ORGANIZE BY SNACK: When setting up a snack drawer for teens, they are not going to spend time rifling in a pile for a snack. I find it is best to organize the items by type. Whenever I added mixed nuts and trail mixes in a tub, they seem to go uneaten. Maybe it’s just my kids.
  • Hang up a grocery list of things the kids want you to buy again. It has been my experience to not buy the same snacks three times in a row, wait a few weeks and recirculate them again.
  • For Cereal or boxed snacks, also put some zipper bags in the drawer so the kids can take as much as they want.
  • Keep the GoGurts in the Freezer for a snack they can cool down with. With GoGurt Freeze & Thaw: the kids will love them frozen right out of the freezer or they can defrost in their lunch boxes.
