My kids had an amazing summer with fun trips with the family. While I enjoyed those memories we shared together as a family, it is also so important for you and your spouse to get away too. Anytime we have had the chance to get away, we always say it reminds us of why we got married. We enjoy long culinary experiences, sleeping in late, exercising together and playing pool or other games the location may have to offer. My hubby and I recently were able to get away for one night to Keswick Hall outside Charlottesville, Virginia. You could not pick a better time of year as the leaves were all changing and the drive was full of glorious fall foliage.

Romantic Getaways at Keswick Hall

Just a quick 1 hr drive from Richmond VA, you feel like you are being displaced to God’s Country with the beautiful and historic farms that line the country roads. Nestled on 600 acres in the middle of Virginia’s wine country you will find a 1912 Tuscan Style estate with only 48 guest rooms. This sets this property off from other “hotels” as it is an intimate setting with very few rooms and the ratio of staff per guests must be pretty close.

Our room was well-appointed with period antiques, a super comfortable king size bed and a large bathroom. It had great appointments like a soaker tub, towel warmers, plush towels and robes, and a shared balcony overlooking the front of the building. Despite the formal antiques and appointments of this property it was very laid back and the staff went out of their way to accommodate your needs and really attempted to get to know their guests.

We almost overlooked the guest services desk as it was a simple desk occupied by a gracious woman, Lisa who provided us with a thorough description of the property when we checked in. Our room was not ready when we arrived, we guessed that would be an issue since we arrived around 1:30,  but wanted to get out of the house ASAP! While we waited for our room to be ready, a mere 45 minutes after our arrival we enjoyed had a lovely alfresco lunch in the club restaurant, The Palmer Room. A casual setting that hosted many families.

We really did not come prepared with an itinerary of things we wanted to do and were thrilled to see all the options from swimming in the heated infinity pool, playing tennis, going to one of the many gym classes, hiking, biking (bikes provided on property), spa treatments, or just hanging out by the fire and reading. They also offer badminton, golf (come spring they will have a newly designed golf course) .

Before dinner, we found ourselves in a Yoga class in their workout center. It was truly one of the best yoga classes I have taken in a while. The yoga class reduced our stress levels and set the tone to relaxed dinner at their signature restaurant Fossets. (no kids allowed) Check out the view from our dinner table. Our own personal fireplace. It felt like no one else was with us. Our wait staff Patrick and Sean could not have been nicer and went out of our way to make us feel like they had no other diners in the restaurant.

Our wait staff was very knowledgeable and helpful in suggesting our entrees. I could not decide and they actually made a 1/2 order of two different entrees. Where does that happen? For the foodies that we are, this was an amazing culinary fine dining experience. With a menu filled with both seasonal and local foods.

After poorly playing a round of pool we escaped to our room and found it to be super quiet. My husband described the silence as deafening. Outside of our child calling our cell phone at 6:40 am that was the first noise we heard all night.

It was said to leave but enjoyed one more decadent meal in Fossets overlooking the golf course.

When I looked on-line to price this excursion I found some amazing deals that included dinner credits and free breakfasts which makes the room almost free. The weekends can be booked with weddings so if you can get away on a weeknight I highly suggest Keswick Hall and hope you will reconnect with your loved ones too. There were plenty of kids on the property so you could easily bring the kids along, I would suggest a good place in warm weather.
